Sorry, Pat, but I don't think you are right. People don't feel electronic medias are as same things as a "physical" things. The feeling in our mind is different. I will never steal DVD in a shop but I don't have a problem to watch illegally copied movie.
Totally different issue is the price of electronic media, but it's not a topic of this talk.

On the one hand, sorry about that, Patrick. 'Wasn't trying to drive you nuts!

On the other, terrific post! Your idea to colour the folds and exits and then unfold the strip is very cool. I wonder if the "mathematics of knots" people have an answer for us, where everything is determined by the number of under- and over-crossing. Or something like that -- my math course on knots was a loooong time ago.

On the other, other hand, geez I love Twitter! They say you should think of every new tweet as the first line in a conversation. All of us toss these 1-liners into the twittersphere, hoping to start something. This time, mine did. Thanks, Patrick. Makes it all worthwhile :)

Sounds like a classic case of Evolution vs. Revolution ;) One thing that I have learned since leaving Taiwan is that sometimes it's okay to give yourself permission to try an idea in baby steps. It might not be what you know it could be...but you can always let it improve over time. I think your post needs an option #4: a scaffolded option. Start with option 1 and then slowly intoduce more ownership to the students. Of course, you want to be transparent about why you are doing it that way... for increased buy-in. This also allows you to account for the difference in motivation between classes.

Have I mentioned that I miss teaching with you?

There are many times I have pondered this since leaving a 1:1 laptop school. It seems that giving kids more options in how they research and present their learning can actually provide more levels of engaging kids. Basically, they might not be inspired by the content, but are inspired by the investigation or platform used to show the learning. The question then becomes : as an effective teacher, what can I do in the classroom to provide these choices when technology is not readily available?

Your writing is way more elegant than mind and I agree. As a create I'm trying to find ways to create for the iPad. I do think it's going to change how we consume information. But I want my students to think of ways to create for others to consume, and in order to do that you need a computer with the SDK iPad kit. :)
